Xerostomia (dry mouth) occurs when the salivary glands do not make enough saliva to keep the mouth moist. Xerostomia is a common side effect of radiation therapy for cancers of the head and neck which greatly impacts the quality of life for individuals living with the condition. Dry mouth can be mild to severe and worsen over time with symptoms often lasting for up to six months after treatment has been completed. Dry mouth is increased with the addition of chemotherapy to radiation therapy and may possibly become chronic. Dry mouth and lips cause discomfort and interrupt normal daily activities such as eating and drinking and can cause an uncomfortable burning sensation.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used for radiation-induced xerostomia for more than two decades. It has helped patients recover their taste buds, improve their dry mouth and also improve the ability to swallow by increasing the flow of saliva.
