Treating Retinitis Pigmentosa with HBOT

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a disease that causes the progressive loss of peripheral and night vision. It is rare, but can eventually lead to vision loss as the retina slowly degenerates. On occasion, early signs of the disease are present in later childhood, but often they are not evident until early or later adulthood.
The loss of night vision is one of the first signs of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Then the loss of peripheral vision shows deterioration of the retina and causes a tunnel vision-like effect. Central vision may eventually be affected. The vision may deteriorate to the point where driving is impossible and complete blindness may result.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been recognized as an effective treatment method for various eye complications associated with diabetes, infections, intoxications, injuries, degenerative diseases or radiation therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been tested with people who suffer with Retinitis Pigmentosa and it has been shown to help slow the degeneration of the retina, by saving retinal receptors and improving visual sharpness. It can reduce the incidence of blindness caused by lack of oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy also improves retinal blood flow and circulation. It is effective in reducing swelling and the risk of developing glaucoma and cataracts.

Orlando Hyperbarics provides Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in a convenient and comfortable non-hospital facility. The center, located at 6200 Lee Vista Boulevard, Suite 250, Orlando, Florida 32822, is served by SR 436 and SR 528, easily accessed from Orlando International Airport, and located near Orlando's Medical City in Lake Nona.
