Israeli patients are reporting remarkable improvements in brain function with oxygen treatments inside hyperbaric chambers up to twenty years after suffering a stroke. While treating strokes with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a new practice, its effectiveness after so many years after the stroke is a new finding. In January, it was reported that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could help those who suffered an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke between 6-36 months earlier and had not seen any improvements in their condition for at least 1 month. Brain imaging was done before and after oxygen therapy. Improvements in brain activity were seen after the therapy was completed and some patients showed significant functional improvements. The improvements held for two years after treatment ended. More information about that study can be found here. To see the Israeli patients' remarkable progress, please watch this Reuters story.
